Acupuncture FAQ
How do I dress for a session?
The best way to dress is with loose fitting clothes. There is a private area in the clinic where you can get dressed for the session.
How many sessions will I need?
The number and frequency of treatments needed depend on the individual and your particular condition.
Is Acupuncture painful?
Since acupuncture needles are very thin and flexible, treatments are gentle and usually painless. If there is a serious energy blockage, you may feel a stinging sensation or tingling around the needle for a few seconds. Most people find the treatment deeply relaxing. Occasionally, a bruise may appear at the point where the needle has been applied, after a few days of treatment. Also, you may feel slightly tired after having acupuncture.
How does Acupuncture work?
Acupuncture involves the insertion and manipulation of sterilized stainless-steel needles in the body. It was developed with the theory that there are special points on the body connected to the meridians (paths of vital energy flow) and internal organs. Illness occurs when the cycle of this energy, Qi, is blocked, deficient, or is excessive. Stimulating points and meridians helps to unblock the stagnation, redirect and balance the flow of Qi. Modern research has shown that the body's immune system, nervous system, endocrine system, metabolism and circulation are affected, regulated, and improved by acupuncture treatments.
What happens in the first Acupuncture visit?
In your assessment you will be asked questions about your condition, personal medical history and your lifestyle. After the discussion, more specific TCM diagnosis techniques, including assessment of the tongue and assessment of pulses on both wrists, will be conducted.
During treatment you will be asked to lie down and needles will be placed in the appropriate acupuncture points to treat your current condition.
All needles used are one time use needles only. They are used only once, and properly discarded immediately after use.
